How to Make a Potent Echinacea Tincture
Echinacea is one of the most popular herbs for boosting the immune system. A tincture is an alcohol-based extraction that is easy to make and preserves the herb's medicinal properties for years. Taking a few drops at the first sign of a sniffle can help your body's natural defenses.
Ingredients & Supplies
- Freshly harvested Echinacea root, leaves, and flowers. (The Medicinal Seed Kit is a great source for seeds.)
- High-proof alcohol (at least 80-proof, or 40% ABV), like vodka or brandy
- A clean glass jar with a tight-fitting lid
- A sharp knife or pruning shears
- A dark glass dropper bottle for storage
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Prepare the Herb: Chop the fresh echinacea (root, leaves, and flowers) into small pieces. The more surface area you create, the better the extraction will be.
- Fill the Jar: Fill your glass jar about two-thirds full with the chopped echinacea. Do not pack it down too tightly.
- Add the Alcohol: Pour the alcohol over the herbs until the jar is completely full and the herbs are submerged.
- Seal and Shake: Screw the lid on tightly and give the jar a good shake. Label the jar with the contents and the date.
- Wait and Watch: Store the jar in a cool, dark place for 4-6 weeks. Shake it every day or as often as you remember.
- Strain and Store: After 4-6 weeks, strain the mixture through a cheesecloth, squeezing out as much liquid as possible. Pour the finished tincture into a dark glass dropper bottle for storage.
